Arms and Armour Project

Project Duration: 100 hours

Condition: Swords and scabbards varied in condition, with some possessing active corrosion on steel, verdigris on hilts and decorative surfaces, and hardened wax from previous coatings.

Scabbards often had degrading velvet and textile surfaces with verdigris in areas where metal came in contact with any organic materials.

Treatment: Sword - Steel surfaces were wiped using white spirit then cleaned using IMS and cotton wadding. Grease was removed using cotton swabs and IMS. Two coats of Renaissance wax were applied.

  1. All silver details were cleaned with IMS. Silvo was used to further remove tarnishing as well as a Goddard’s silver polishing cloth.

  2. All copper gilt details were cleaned with IMS. Brasso was used to further remove tarnishing as well as a Goddard’s silver polishing cloth.

  3. All verdigris was mechanically removed using bamboo skewers. Any remnants were then cleaned using IMS and cotton wadding.
