Silver Belt

(OA1892)

Project Duration: 15 Hours

Date: early 19th c.

Materials: Silver, textile, leather, coral, stone

Condition:

Object is in fair condition. Belt strap is intact with verdigris embedded into the metallic thread details at the end of the belt. Two metal details on the ends of the cords are attached with wire from a previous treatment. Three coral inlays and approximately 3-4 silver nail heads are missing. Silver nail heads are heavily tarnished and have thick verdigris throughout. Bronze buckles are tarnished and covered in verdigris as well. Leather buckle end has verdigris embedded into the leather/metal weaving details. Proper right pouch is only partially closed while the proper left pouch is fully closed, both due to seizing of the cords. Neither pouch can be further opened or closed without the likelihood of damage.

Treatment:

All silver nail heads were cleaned with IMS and acetone. Silvo was used to further remove tarnishing as well as a Goddard’s silver polishing cloth and Goddard’s silver pad. Surfaces were wiped with IMS lastly. Verdigris was mechanically removed using bamboo skewers. Any remnants were then cleaned using IMS and cotton wadding. Bronze buckles were cleaned using IMS and Brasso.
