Measuring Musicality: A Pilot Case Playability Index for the Conservation of Musical Instruments
This dissertation delves into the realm of dynamic objects in the context of museums, with a specific focus on playable musical instrument collections. These dynamic instruments are more than mere vessels, with their intrinsic value extending far beyond their material nature. Historic musical instruments represent unique examples of the past, each one possessing rich narratives and a remarkable sensory significance that transcends centuries and cultures. The primary case study - a Pilot Case Playability Index - explores how to preserve these objects that challenge traditional conservation practices, broadening the scope of values-based conservation decision-making.
A central component of this dissertation is the creation and refinement of the Playability Index, a tool dedicated to the practical assessment of the playability risk of historic woodwind instruments. The design, evaluation, and critical review of the index are thoroughly addressed.
Additionally, critical insights gained through post-semi-structured interviews with participants from a diverse array of professional backgrounds were crucial elements of this process. The overarching aspiration of this research is to promote the collaboration required to adequately preserve dynamic musical instruments. Highlighting the importance of a dynamic object’s functional and sensory values in relation to its materiality, the design of the Playability Index aims to promote these nuanced perspectives beyond that of traditional conservation approaches.
The study concludes through the contemplation of the future of musicality in dynamic musical instruments, expressing the necessity of encouraging collaboration, recognising the multi-faceted significance of these objects, and honouring their integral role in the evolving landscape of contemporary institutions.
