Object Description:
Machine shop model consists of 44 functioning miniature machines, each of which is electrically powered by hand-made leather belts and line shafts. The hundreds of components are maintained through the replacement of leather straps as needed, as well as routine lubrication to ensure safe and efficient use of the model.
Condition:
Object is in functional condition, motor is in good condition and receives consistent maintenance. Multiple gears on machine 32 are seizing and require cleaning and treatment. 10 leather straps are weakened and require replacement. Three sections of the undersides of bolts that rest on wooden blocks inside the gear are loose and would benefit from being tacked to the bolt to prevent loss of the blocks during movement.
Treatment Performed:
Cleaning - metal surfaces were cleaned using IMS. Parts were be dismantled and cleaned individually using swabs.
Repair - Loose bolts were adhered in place using Paraloid B72 30% (w/v in acetone). Machine was reassembled. Leather straps in need of replacement were replaced with new leather straps of the same length and width. Each strap was adhered together using leather adhesive and clamped for 24 hours to cure.
