Object Description:
Double bass was purchased in 1955 and was used by owner in childhood and throughout his life. Double base is strung and modern strings and bridge.
Condition (Pre-Installation):
Double Bass is in fair condition overall, structurally sound but evidence of previous damages to monitor and remain cautious of. Base of instrument possesses the most damage, with losses, splintering, and abrasions along the edges and body. Damages are a mixture of old and new, but largest losses appear newer. Source of damage or when it occurred is unknown. Base of tailpiece is abraded with noticeable losses to the black toned finish. Finger board is sound but has losses to the finishes underneath the strings. Upper section of tail piece is in good condition and all strings are recently string and a safe tension for extended display.
Along front of body, hairline cracks are present throughout, especially along the base and near edges. These cracks do not appear to be currently structurally unsound but should be monitored for potential progression of damage. Along proper left of upper front, evidence of a previous paint splatter is present. Source of paint or when it occurred is unknown but was unable to be removed with water or cleaning solution by owner in previous years.
Head of instrument is in fair condition and strings are in good condition and properly strung. Previous break occurred between head and neck of instrument approximately 30 years prior. Head was reattached using hide glue and the repair was recently reassessed and new adhesive was applied between 2018-2019 by a restorer. Repair is currently stable but should be carefully handled. Brass hardware is in good condition and has a natural patina.
Condition (Installation):
Double Bass was transported in a soft case to site on 9 April 2024 and installed on 10 April 2024. In assessing the instrument, there was no change in physical quality from previous condition assessment. Instrument was installed in floor stand with padded supports. Stand was secured to floor with screws. The neck of the instrument was reinforced to the mount using clear fishing line to ensure the object did not move out of place during the exhibition. Instrument was contained in a perspex display case with an environmental monitor located inside.
